To learn how to check laptop battery health, use the built-in Windows battery report, then compare the battery’s design capacity with its full-charge capacity. If the current capacity is much lower than the original capacity, the battery is worn; if the capacity looks healthy but runtime is poor, look for charger, port, charging-circuit or background-app problems before buying a replacement.

Run the Windows battery report

Windows 11 can create a detailed battery report with the built-in powercfg command. You do not need to install a separate app for the basic health check.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Type powercfg /batteryreport.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Open the HTML file shown in Command Prompt. Dell also notes that the file may be saved as battery_report.html in the user folder.

Start with the sections named Installed batteries, Recent usage and Battery usage. The first tells you what the battery can hold; the usage sections help you see whether the laptop is draining unusually fast during actual use.

Read the three numbers that matter

Battery reports can look busy, but most owners only need three values at first: design capacity, full-charge capacity and cycle count.

  • Design capacity is the battery’s original capacity when new, usually shown in milliwatt-hours, or mWh.
  • Full-charge capacity is what the battery can currently hold when fully charged.
  • Cycle count is the number of charge and discharge cycles the battery has experienced.

A charge cycle is not always one single plug-in and unplug event. Apple explains it as using an amount equal to 100% of battery power, even if that use is spread across several partial uses.

It is normal for full-charge capacity to be lower than design capacity as a battery ages. The question is whether the difference is small enough for your needs, or large enough that replacement is now the sensible path.

Calculate your battery health percentage

Use this calculation:

Battery health percentage = full-charge capacity ÷ design capacity × 100

For example, if the full-charge capacity is half of the design capacity, the battery is holding about half of what it was designed to hold when new. The same comparison also gives battery wear: wear percentage = 100 − battery health percentage.

Windows expects the full-charge value to update after charging, not while the battery is discharging. If you are comparing reports, avoid judging a value that has not had a chance to update after a charge.

What you see What it means Next step
Near design Capacity looks healthy Check usage drain
Around 80% Noticeable wear Monitor runtime
Fair status Nearing usable end Plan replacement
Poor or Unknown Replacement advised Confirm part
Under 25% Severe loss Check BIOS too

The 80% figure needs context. Apple says Mac laptop batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of original charge capacity at their maximum cycle count, and many MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models list a 1000-cycle maximum. Windows laptop makers do not all use the same public replacement line, so treat 80% as a practical warning point, not a universal rule.

Dell gives two useful labels for its own checks: Fair means the battery is nearing the end of usable life, while Poor or Unknown means replacement is recommended. Dell also says that if full-charge capacity is under 25% of designed capacity, the laptop BIOS should also be checked for battery health.

Use this quick decision tree

Short runtime does not always mean the battery itself is faulty. Use the report and the laptop’s symptoms together.

  • Full-charge capacity is much lower than design capacity: the battery is worn. If the laptop still runs safely and runtime is acceptable, you can continue using it; if not, plan a replacement.
  • Capacity looks reasonable but battery drains quickly: check Recent usage and Battery usage for heavy drain patterns. A background app, high performance workload or display use may be the cause.
  • Battery is not charging, but the report still detects it: consider the charger or adapter first, especially if the laptop works inconsistently on power.
  • Charging starts and stops when the cable is moved: the DC jack or USB-C charging port may be involved. Stop flexing the cable, as this can make damage worse.
  • No battery is detected: check the laptop maker’s BIOS, UEFI or diagnostic tool. If it still cannot see the battery, ask a technician to inspect the battery connection and charging circuit.
  • Capacity numbers look impossible: do not make a buying decision from that report alone. Confirm with the BIOS, UEFI or the laptop maker’s diagnostic tool.

If the battery is swollen, the touchpad or keyboard is lifting, the casing is opening, or the laptop shuts down suddenly during normal use, stop using and charging it. Do not press the casing flat or puncture the battery; ask a technician before removing or replacing it.

Check macOS and maker diagnostics

If you use a Mac, check the cycle count as part of the battery assessment. Apple recommends replacement once the battery reaches the cycle-count limit for that model, and many models in Apple’s table list a 1000-cycle maximum.

For Windows laptops, the battery report is a strong starting point, but it is not the only check. Dell lists Windows battery report, BIOS or UEFI, Dell Optimizer, Dell Power Manager and onboard diagnostics as ways to check battery health. Lenovo’s diagnostics include a Battery module with Battery Health Test, Battery Temperature Test, Battery Discharge Test and Battery Charge Test.

The extra tests are useful when the Windows report is missing a cycle count, cannot detect a battery, or shows readings that do not match the laptop’s behaviour. Lenovo’s Battery Health Test checks charge capacity and other battery properties. Its Battery Discharge Test needs more than 20% charge and no AC cable, while its Battery Charge Test needs AC connected and battery charge at or below 93%.

When replacement is worth considering

A replacement is worth considering when the battery no longer gives you usable runtime, when the full-charge capacity has fallen far below design capacity, or when the maker’s health tool reports a status that recommends replacement. If the laptop is otherwise working well, replacing the battery can be more sensible than replacing the whole laptop.

Before buying, match the exact battery model or part number, not only the laptop brand name. Open the battery report and note the battery name if shown, then check the label on the existing battery where it is safe to do so. Useful details include the laptop model, battery part number, voltage and connector shape. Clear photos help when a model has more than one battery option.

In Singapore, if you already know the part number, you can compare it against the LaptopClinic.sg battery category. For example, an HP battery marked HT03XL or a compatible part number listed on the item page can be checked against the HT03XL replacement battery page. If the part number is unclear, send the laptop model and battery-label photos through the contact page before ordering.

DIY replacement is more reasonable when the battery is easy to access, the casing is not swollen or damaged, and you are comfortable opening the laptop without forcing clips or cables. Choose a technician if the battery is glued in, the laptop uses many hidden clips, the connector looks fragile, the laptop has charging-port symptoms, or the old battery is swollen. For removed batteries, use an appropriate battery or e-waste recycling route rather than putting the pack into general household rubbish.

Questions and answers

Can I check battery health in Windows 11 without installing an app?

Yes. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run powercfg /batteryreport, then open the HTML file shown in Command Prompt. Start with Installed batteries, Recent usage and Battery usage.

Where is the battery_report.html file saved?

Command Prompt shows the exact path after the report is created. Dell notes that the file may be saved as battery_report.html in the user folder.

What is the difference between design capacity and full-charge capacity?

Design capacity is the battery’s original capacity when new. Full-charge capacity is what the battery can currently hold when fully charged. Comparing them estimates battery wear.

What cycle count is considered high?

It depends on the laptop model. Apple recommends replacement once the model’s cycle-count limit is reached, and many MacBook models list a 1000-cycle maximum. For Windows laptops, compare the report with the maker’s BIOS or diagnostic tool if the cycle count looks concerning.

Should I trust the Windows report or the BIOS diagnostic?

Use the Windows report first because it is quick and built in. If the report shows no battery, no cycle count, impossible capacity numbers, or very low full-charge capacity, confirm with the BIOS, UEFI or the laptop maker’s diagnostic tool before buying a battery.
